To meet the demands of 21st century competence and maintain competitiveness in the global market, a country must prepare reliable human resources. Reliable human resources must meet criteria such as having life skills, being able to develop 21st century competency content, mastering their areas of expertise, possessing high-order thinking skills (such as critical, creative, communication, and collaboration), as well as ICT literacy. In this case, the Postgraduate Science Tadris Masters Study Program at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati has a strategic position in producing Masters graduates who are experts in the field of science education, with a halal literacy approach which is the value of excellence in science education.
The Tadris Science Masters Study Program at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung was established based on the Decree of the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1122 of 2022 concerning Permits to Organize Tadris Science Study Programs for the Masters Program at Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University Bandung dated October 10 2022. Tadris Science Masters Study Program UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung Postgraduate Program began accepting new students in the even semester of the 2022/2023 academic year and has accepted 32 new students from alumni from various tertiary institutions (UPI, Unpas, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung) graduates of Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics education.
The teaching staff at the Tadris Science Masters Study Program consist of professors and doctors who have obtained professional educator certificates. They come from six undergraduate study programs, all of which have A and B accreditation titles, namely Physics Education, Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Mathematics Education, Biology, and Physics.
Based on the results of the latest tracer study specifically for alumni of the Science Education Department of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, the profiles of graduates chosen by respondents were 76.5% as educators and 16% as researchers, namely science education researchers at expert level who have the ability to solve educational and learning problems IPA through scientific research. Other results obtained from this tracer study include:
Expertise in science education obtained through postgraduate education, both at the master’s and doctoral levels, is needed by various institutions or agencies, especially to increase the competence of science teachers at the school level. Expertise with master qualifications obtained through Tadris S2 or Master Tadris IPA is shown to have the ability as mandated by Law of the Republic of Indonesia number 14 of 2005 concerning Teachers and Lecturers which implies that teachers are professional educators with the main task of educating, teaching, guiding, directing, train, assess, and evaluate students in early childhood education through formal education, basic education, and secondary education.
HISTORY OF S2 SCIENCE EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM
The Tadris Science Masters Study Program was established to meet the needs of the public and education practitioners in following the rapid developments in science and technology, as well as complying with Indonesian government policies regarding teacher professionalism and the Indonesian national qualification framework (KKNI). In addition, the opening of this program also aims as a means for disseminating research results in the field of Natural Sciences and Natural Sciences Education that have been produced by lecturers at the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training and the Faculty of Science and Technology. This is done to expand the dissemination and development of science and science education in a sustainable manner.
After going through the submission process since 2020, on October 10, 2022, the Decree of the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1122 of 2022 concerning the Permit to Organize the Tadris IPA Study Program for the Masters Program at Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University Bandung was issued. This program is designed to produce graduates with master teacher competencies in science education and learning, so as to meet the needs for upgrading the qualifications of science teachers in junior high, high school and vocational schools. In addition, this program is also expected to be able to facilitate the fulfillment of the need for upgrading the qualifications of science teachers for SMP, SMA, SMK, and the equivalent, based on science sub-fields such as science, chemistry, physics, and biology teachers. Apart from that, the opening of this Study Program is also expected to be a means for lecturers, researchers, and practitioners/policy makers in science education to improve their qualifications and competencies.
Postgraduate Postgraduate Science Tadris Science Masters Program at the State Islamic University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung was developed on the initiative of the Dean of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training UIN Sunan Gunung Djati. This initiative is based on the accreditation of Bachelor of Biology, Physics Education, and Chemistry Education, which have been accredited very well and have produced many graduates.
The Tadris Science Masters Study Program is an important study program to develop because alumni of the Bachelor of Biology, Physics and Chemistry Education have a high interest in continuing their studies to a higher level in accordance with the demands of their respective jobs. The Tadris Science Masters Study Program at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung is part of the vision, mission, goals and strategies (VIMTUSA) of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The formulation of the Vision of UIN SGD is as follows: “To become a superior and competitive State Islamic University based on revelation guiding knowledge within the framework of Karimah Morals in Southeast Asia in 2025”. There are several main keywords in this vision, namely goals (excellent, competitive), process (revelations guiding knowledge, good morals), place limits (SOUTHEAST ASIA with the aim of Southeast Asia), and time limits (2025). On the basis of the vision of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati, the vision of the TIPA Masters Study Program is formulated as, “To become a Science Tadris Master Study Program with superior and competitive revelation-based halal literacy to guide knowledge within the framework of good morals in Southeast Asia in 2028.”
